Mallala CFS

At the beginning of this year I chose to join CFS because I wanted to get involved with the community. It took about 10 weeks to get accepted onto the first training course - Basic Fire Fighting 1 (BFF1) and this I have now completed. This means I can now go on the truck with the crew and fight fires and attend incidents. I'm still waiting for my first call.

Station Working

I am a girl that loves working around horses and getting involved with everything. So this is why I want to work on a station.

A station hand is an employee, who is involved in routine duties on a station and this may also involve caring for livestock, too.

Station workers have to keep water tanks and troughs clean and full at all times, maintain machinery, motors and generators as well as keep accurate records of all maintenance. They must identify delivery of water in litres per second, (need a bit of maths here, oh dear! not my strong point!) Checking that holding paddocks and traps are in good order, feed out and record any supplementary cattle lick used and needed and identify and report the conditions of cattle and grass per paddock. You must also record rainfall and maintain rain gauges throughout station. Now the worse bit, collecting dung samples to send for faecal sampling when required. Finally the best bits cattle handling and mustering on both horse, motorbikes and quad bikes, branding of livestock, fencing construction and maintenance, on- farm truck driving  and welding.

Veterinary Nurse

This is a picture of some vet nurses doing a health check on a dog. This is a career that i am looking forward to doing in the future.
Some of the things a vet nurse does is care for hospitalized animals, giving medication, giving injections, helping the vet during examinations and operations, go out on visits, carry out laboratory examinations such as blood and urine, testing, giving general information to owners about household animals, doing post-operative checks, taking stitches out, developing x-rays, keep the surgery clean and hygienic and looking after the sick and recovering animals.
I would like to become a vet nurse because I have always loved helping mum look after sick and injered animals. Also I made sure that they recover and get better fast. Also I have been around animals all my life and I know what some of them are like.
